I tried this entry in $HOME/texmf/texdoc/texdoc.cnf:
viewer_pdf = evince %s %
Strangely, "texdoc amsmath" does open the expected pdf document with
evince, but it also displays another window telling an error and many
warnings emitted from evince in the terminal:

Description: Document viewer window showing error

Description: Terminal window showing many warnings
This isn't satisfactory for me. :-(
I'll try Yuri's revised patch instead.
