This seems a very good idea actually.  Doing so would allow us to avoid
yet another modification of the Automake script or modules (which are
quite fragile w.r.t. global modifications, due to muddy APIs and lots
of global statuses), and offer something re-usable in an eventual
"Automake-NG 2.0" (which should be much more similar to Quagmire than
to the current mainline Automake).

I should be able to attempt a patch this evening or tomorrow.
