FreeBSD offers what they call `ports' for each of the major versions
All I gotta do then is to edit the various bootstrap scripts so it uses the exact version number.
On my linux system I use GENTOO with its port/slot system that is not a problem. Alas doesn't help with the cygwin problem right now.
