With yesterdays cvs checkout (Ocean theme), the menus and popup menus
looked pretty good overall. The only nitpick I had with that version
was that the indentation of normal and checkbox menu items was not
really visually compatible. I guess it would be best to align normal
menu items to the labels of checkbox menu items if both kinds of menu
items are used in one menu...

Todays cvs checkout uses Metal theme again. The BoxLayout issues seem
solved, and menu items, separators, and checkbox menu items are aligned
consistently. However, the menu appearance is optically very 'tight'
due to missing or very small borders around the menu items.
The JDK 1.4.2 layout uses a few extra border pixels, resulting in a
more 'pleasing' (to my eye) appearance.

I still have no idea why my window manager (ctwm) sometimes decorates
the menu popups, and sometimes not.

Anyway, thanks for fixing this.
