The manual is wrong (and in general, the manual shipped with Tar 1.12 
needed a LOT of work).  I don't know whether this is fixed in Tar 1.13, 
but since there's no DOS port of that version, it might not be relevant 
for you.  The last version ported to DOS is 1.12a, available here:

(This still cannot verify multi-volume archive, but at least it has some
other bugs solved.)
