The simple approach you suggested brings up issues with key management. If
you require that someone always has her private key with her to prove that
she is who she says she is, you have to make sure it doesn't get lost or
stolen. The problem with using private keys as passwords is that they are
both very difficult to remember, and also difficult to manage since you
must ensure they're destroyed if used from a number of different machines.
