The natural solution in our life and death reading paradigm would be
to handle these shapes as eyes. The only problem is that, in order to
reliably detect certain life that way, we would need another level or
two of sophistication(*) in the eye analysis.

(*) Such as understanding cutting points, distinguish between marginal
eye points of different types, and recognizing the risk for shortage
of liberties when the opponent descends to the edge outside a hanging
connection.
