I would just replace them with a "." and do a regex search.
Same with spaces, I suppose. Problem with spaces is that we
don't know whether they separate truly separate name parts,
eg. first from lastname, or just some admonition.

Of course, didn't even think of that.
Also just Al*...

Ah ! Something to learn every day...

Those we take care of already.

Sure enough I have recollections of exactly that when Germany
first introduced plastic health care cards. Things have
improved, though.

Can happen, sure. But first I'd worry about getting him OUT OF
MY EMERGENCY ROOM no matter what the name ;-)

I guess so. That's why I favour using his code in 2.0.

It would make for a nice regression test database ... Very
helpful.

not done yet, but not the correct approach for many-part
names, rather for van/van der/de etc.
will do

will do

which unfortunately only works for English names

that's another idea worth considering, actually

For that I'd actually even suggest adding a flag
incorrect-but-legal to arbitrary name rows.

We already do. Any patient can have arbitrary amounts of
names. Only one of them can be marked active, however. IOW,
those marked incorrect-but-legal would be considered semi-active...
