For me, the only reason this field is there is to allow for
distinction between SR and standard forms of the SAME drug
with the SAME name.

On further thought, I was responding in part to the specifics of "SR" since there are a variety of alternate designations, some are proprietary (even "SR" is part of a "trademarking" technique), but what they all have in common (be they "durules", MS "Contin" or other designation) is that they are *not* the regular form.

So something that more generically captures "not regular" or "special formulation" which is not always "sustained release" - one could potentially be dealing with a fast-release preparation ;-)
