I would probably drop split and use tar :-) It won't
compress (since openssl is in use) but it is able to split the
input and invoke scripts at the beginning end end of each
new medium.
You might consider adding a gzip step between the pg_dump
and the openssl.
If you come up with something useful please post it. I think
it's worthwhile to put into CVS or onto the Wiki.
