I haven't tried this, but will it work? I thought we were using fprintf to avoid recursion problems with NSLog when basic things like the user defaults were being setup.

It does work to prevent multiple warnings under notmal conditions (I tested
it) ... but you are right, I had forgotten we specifically used fprintf in
path utilities, and I can imagine circumstances where it might not work. So
I will change it to use fprintf again ... and also consider whether other
code could cause similar problems.
