Don't mix explicit pipelines and groff: groff is a program which
simply organises the preprocessors and troff. Either use explicit
preprocessors and troff (as in your first case) or do
groff -e -ms file
(the "-e" pulls in the 'eqn' preprocessor). See "man groff".
