If grops's output looks OK in gv for a particular version of groff, but
then the ps2pdf output for that very same file is dodgy in the same gv
then that limits it to GhostScript's ps2pdf since groff is no longer
involved once the PostScript has been produced.

ps2pdf should be able to distill any valid PostScript AIUI.

By all means keep talking about it on the groff list since it will be of
interest, but you may have more chance of an answer talking to the
GhostScript folks.
