It has just struck me that you are probably writing in Esperanto here (iso-8859-3 encoding).
UTF-8 encoding, usually, throughout my system. I also write French occasionally, but that usually works once Esperanto works. I've found instructions on installing UTF-8 postscript fonts and can transcode the character sets that I require, but the warnings suggested I was stumbling on groff input before getting there.
Thanks for the extra information. I also produce html and text output at times. Will this:
.char \[c^] \N'nnn'
