I think they're mnemonics:
C-p(revious), C-n(ext) -- one line
C-f(orward), C-b(back) -- one character
I feel nuch more comfortable by using these key bindings than any arrow keys.
This is simpler than trying to get in touch with these small arrow keys (at
least
on my laptop).
