Maybe http://www.emacswiki.org/cgi-bin/emacs-en?CategoryCode or a simple hello-world: (defun hello-world() (interactive) (message "Hello!")) put that in your *Scratch* buffer, do M-x eval-buffer and then M-x hello-world
