thanks for your detailed explanations. 
I finally used put in "export 
PATH=/Applications/Emacs.app/Contents/MacOS/:$PATH" in ~/.profile, so now I can 
call "emacs" from within the terminal (e.g., via sudo) and get the desired 
result.
