Did you try this?
To avoid having all ticked articles (and stuff) entered into
the cache, you should set ‘gnus-use-cache’ to ‘passive’ if
you’re just interested in persistent articles:
(setq gnus-use-cache 'passive)
(info "(gnus) Persistent Articles")
