Is there a way to coax you to show us the error message?  ....  If you found a

problem compiling with 3.6.3 other than that, something else could be

seriously wrong,  ...

Partial success, not quite what I had hoped for :<

I rebuilt octave 3.6.3 on a spare server from the beginning, incl make uninstall ; rm -r /usr/local/share/octave/ ~/octave

In that installation package communications and depencies install w/o error. 


But I managed to find another one 8-D


Package 'communications' is not set for automatic load, and here is what happens if you try to use it:

octave:1> pkg load communications
error: load_packages: A(I) = X: X must have the same size as I
error: called from:
error:   /usr/local/share/octave/3.6.3/m/pkg/pkg.m at line 2136, column 21
error:   /usr/local/share/octave/3.6.3/m/pkg/pkg.m at line 401, column 7

Same for other packages ...
