Also there is a free implementation in e.g. GSL:

I have rechecked GSL license, and its is GPL3:
"
* This program is free software; you can redistribute it and/or modify
* it under the terms of the GNU General Public License as published by
* the Free Software Foundation; either version 3 of the License, or (at
* your option) any later version.
".
Calling GPL free is one of most blatant lies and raging hypocrisies. GPL is a
corporate cartel license. For illustration see
https://www.linuxfoundation.org/members/corporate .
Since GPL is a brainchild of US - see the address including Boston, MA, the
hypocrisy in/of it is to be expected:
https://www.strategic-culture.org/news/2014/12/23/hypocrisy-empire-i.html ->
https://www.strategic-culture.org/news/2015/01/23/hypocrisy-empire-ii.html ->
https://www.strategic-culture.org/news/2015/02/08/hypocrisy-empire-iii.html .
As well as the blatant lie (of it being free) :
'"Empire of LIES: The Ron Paul Documentary" / Interview with Charles Goyette' -
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1PH5bFV-sTQ .
A truly free license is https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WTFPL .
A built-in into GCC function typically is OK - because GCC license allows
closed source code linked with its library. And IIRC nowadays 'glibc' can be
used under a *BSD license. If in doubt, use LLVM - because the compiler is
under a *BSD license.
This whole GPL is free SW statement is typically Orwellian - in full accordance
with
"George Orwell and Language Control" -
http://contemporaryworldliterature.com/?p=316 .
The corporate nature of GPL is also a reflection of corporatocracy - if not
yet, watch the videos:
https://duckduckgo.com/?q=corporatocracy+antoby+sutton&t=ffsb&iar=videos&iax=1&ia=videos
