Your on the right track as far as using ALSA for /dev/sequencer support.
OSS /dev/midi doesn't allow one to share the connection through multiple
software programs, where as the ALSA sequencer does. What you need to do
is compile iiwusynth once ALSA has been installed (most note-ably
alsa-lib). You should see "ALSA support = yes" or something to that
effect at the end of the iiwusynth configure script, if everything goes
right. You shouldn't need CVS for this. Cheers!
