This tool is useful for assigning the book no. of a given document.

The call no. of a document consists of the class no. (assigned by
classification schemes like DC/LC) and the book no. (Cutter's table is one
of the tools for assigning it). The book no. individualises each class
no. usually based on the author surname.

For example, the Call No. for "Moby Dick" by Herman Melville:

823 => Call no. assigned by DC for 'English Fiction'
M497 M => Book no. M497 for 'Melville' and 'M' is first letter of title.

The book no. may also include copy no., vol. no. or the edition, eg, c.1
or v.2.
