Just to make it clear, you're going to need the build-essential
package installed to compile from source, and you follow directions in
COMPILE.txt

For new users with a technical bent, I usually recommend digging
around in synaptic (a front-end for apt) for a while before compiling
from source, many times you will find a solution.

In your case, you may even find that emulating an environment like C64
(vice) will be less of a headache.
