I'll solve the puzzle easily:

Everything which goes through as XHTML/1.1 is fine, except if
it's written like

 <?xml version="1.0" encoding="foo"?>

for foo != default charset, and does not contain
a meta http-equiv=content-type tag (lynx doesn't
seem to parse the xml encoding type).

Also, only everything going as valid XHTML/1.1 as
per W3C parser is valid HTML.
