Follow-up Comment #13, bug #57083 (project octave):

The attached patch adds a new Octave function "is_same_file". Using the
underscores in the function name it should be pretty low risk to clash with
any future Matlab function.
If that is preferred, we could also make this function internal by adding the
double underscores.

@Philip: It sounds like you already identified all points in pkg that need
changing. So could you please check if you can use the new function instead of
canonicalize_file_name?
