I think does most of the job. Remaining (minor IMHO) issues:
* For contour, ML draws three ellipse rather than 2 rectangles: there is no
reason to prefer ellipses (discrete data never produce rounded contours), and
I think addind a third patch would be overkill.
* For errorbar, ML draws the main line, which is cool but we would need to add
a third line object to draw the icon: one for the bar(s) one for the marker
and one for the main line.
