Originally, I think Octave supports different color specifications than
matlab.  So I accepted that the two codes may differ on this specific subject.
 

I went through your list.  I think the list is consistent with 
https://www.mathworks.com/help/matlab/ref/matlab.graphics.primitive.patch-properties.html

One observation is that mathworks has the following on FaceVertexCData : 

Face and vertex colors, specified as a single color for the entire patch, one
color per face, or one color per vertex for interpolated face color.

Your list appears to reject one color per face for FaceVertexCData.  For many
applications, the physical quantities, like displacement, velocity, etc are
readily available at the vertices.  To get the face values, additional domain
integration is required.  I am sure that I will not spend the extra.  But I
have no saying what others would do.  

I think the crash issue should move to a different bug report.
