Follow-up Comment #5, bug #65511 (group octave):

So, I stumbled on something that allowed the built-in emacs editor to open
within the Octave multi-window display. Yea!

In the Preferences, the "customer editor" box was checked. I unchecked that
box, and it worked.

FYI, within the "command string field" for that custom editor selection, the
(default string, I suspect) entry there is: "emacs +%l %f" but apparently that
caused the confusion somewhere.

FYI - "double clicking the .m-file"... in the multi-window display, the upper
left window is a directory list of files.  I was double-clicking to open one
of the existing .m files.
