Your understanding is correct, and the only file that was cleared was the one that I tried closing, other files open in editor ware retained as they were before their last save.
As you said it could have been conflict with windows or the backup system I'm using (google drive).

Follow-up Comment #4, bug #62271 (project octave):

ok, thanks for the info. recent changes were made to gui save behavior to try
and prevent loss of data like you're reporting. see [1]. but that specifically
was to avoid data being cleared during a save operation.

again, for clarification, all files open had been saved previously and
definitely had data written to disk, including the one that crashand on
closing? after the crash, did all files have contents cleared, or just the one
that you were closing when it crashed?

not sure how octave might have resulted in a data clearing event when not in a
save operation other than conflict with something else (file system or network
issue?)
