Steve, tell you what.

Clone Octave, incorporate the function there however you see fit but
without using a dynamically linked function (dynamic linking should
only be used for external libraries) and regularly tell me where to
pull from. Maintain that clone, pulling from Octave regularly and
merging in your own changes, and I guess everyone will be happy.
