According to the GTK homepage:
22 Dec 2002
The GTK+ team is proud to announce the release of version 2.2 of the GTK+
widget toolkit and associated libraries (GLib, Pango, and ATK). The 2.2
release adds significant new functionality while maintaining source and
binary compatibility with GTK+-2.0.
I installed GTK 2.2, and my GTK 2.0 based GAIM still fires up. I'm not sure
if that's a valid test or not, but it works for me. :)
