Sounds like you need to update "intltool". I'm using 0.25 and it works (I 
had to upgrade from 0.17).

Running intltoolize...
patching file po/Makefile.in.in
Hunk #1 succeeded at 21 (offset 7 lines).
Hunk #2 succeeded at 34 (offset -5 lines).
Hunk #3 succeeded at 99 with fuzz 2 (offset 7 lines).
Hunk #4 succeeded at 196 (offset -22 lines).
Hunk #5 succeeded at 236 (offset 7 lines).

autoconf 2.54, automake 1.6, libtool 1.43, gettext 0.10.40, intltool 0.25
and gnome-common 1.2.4 seems to work OK here. The auto* tools do tend to
break quite often though.

I looked up the word 'paranoid' in the dictionary. It said 'what do you
