OK, the only way how to make slrn and pan work together seems to be to 
rm .newsrc and recreate it with pan. slrn apparently doesn't have a 
problem to read pan's .newsrc, but pan is nervous about slrn's one. Whose 
fault it is, I have no idea, but at least it seems to work this way.
