Meh. MS pushed me off that costly upgrade wheel some time ago, and I landed on Linux. That's perhaps the best thing I hold MS at least in part responsible for. =:^)
I stuck with Win98 long after others had moved on partially because of the cost and partially because I've never liked the "NT kernel" and some of the (to me bad) choices they made. Jerry Pournelle once asked me what I'd do when it wasn't possible any longer to get new software or updates for 98 and I told him that as I was already dual-booting Linux, I'd switch to it completely. He gave me a strange look. I've been running straight Linux, now, ever since Fedora 9 came out, and when I showed him the desktop effects Compiz can do, he was impressed enough to mention them in his column. And, my sister, who's no tech and just wants things to work, uses the latest Ubuntu on her desktop, with a Windows laptop for things she needs that won't run under Wine.
As you write, further on, there's always a choice, you just have to be willing to look outside your current box.
