Actually, for almost all of her needs the sort worked. There were only a few cases where there were several customers that were only separated by different customer numbers, and having them end up not in numeric order wasn't that much of a problem, because they were all together anyway. (That is, you might end up with John Doe 245, John Doe 56, John Doe 169, but there'd be nobody else between them.) The boss didn't care because he didn't see that as a problem and, to be honest, neither did I. As long as all customers named John Doe were together, he and I felt that having them out of numeric order didn't matter. And, considering that the system we were working on didn't allow multi-tasking, getting her prompt back in 3 minutes instead of 60 was a great improvement.
