Assuming your pan binary was built with secure-connections support (it's
a build-time option that adds a dependency on the GnuTLS library, so some
builders prefer to build without it)...

That will change to secure connections, and switch the port to the
default secure port (563). If you wish to try some other port, simply
change it after you've selected secure/plaintext, because toggling the
latter /does/ switch the port selection to the appropriate default.

And one other thing... Some providers have a different server domain name
for their secure connections, tho AFAIK that's less common with news
providers as they tend to use the same domain name no matter what port
you connect on, than with certain other protocols and servers.

So if the plain-text server is reached at nntp://news.sample.com:119, the
secure server might be reached at nntps://snews.sample.com:563, or
perhaps nntps://secure.news.sample.com:563.

But for gmane, based on my settings anyway, it's the same news.gmane.org
either way, and only the port (along with subsequent protocol
negotiation) tells gmane which one you want.
