I have not done any serious evaluation of BBB but I think you could be right that we do have the software and and what we need is something like the so-called platform cooperativism"

Framasoft and Opendesktop.org seem to be pursuing the project of making Free groupware software available.  Their funding model is based on donations, and it seems to work.  Alternatively, a business could sell access to the service.  For example, 8x8.com sells Jitsi-based communications services and funds Jitsi development.

Thoughts?  Do we have the software we need?
