This sounds very much like the dents I got in my forehead doing the 
install.  What finally helped fix it for me was to go through and make 
sure all the libraries and header files were from db5.3 (version I 
used).  From there it was using the source's sample DB_CONFIG file 
dropped into the DB directory after the initial build and then the 
PTree directory after the PTree build.
