Well, you have to admit your setup is pretty peculiar :). Maybe you
could just choose to use a non-black background, after all in stump
you hardly ever see it in tiling-groups so it wouldn't really hurt to
have one specially for the floating groups, would it?

If you really want something per group type, I think it would be an
option to turn the borders on or off, per group colours souds a bit
bloated to me.

Also, it would be quite easy to set per group or per group type
backgrounds by hooking *focus-group-hook*.

After all, one of the selling points of stumpwm is "no more themes",
isn't it? :)
