There's also ~/.local/share/mime which contains XML files. It's only used by google earth here. The related Debian update tool says it's the X Desktop specification which should not mean much more than Gnome or KDE according to <http://www.freedesktop.org/wiki/Desktops> The specs are about here: <http://standards.freedesktop.org/shared-mime-info-spec/shared-mime-info-spec-0.13.html#s2_layout> and more generally resources at <http://freedesktop.org/wiki/Specifications/shared-mime-info-spec> Responsible for the shared-mime-info package seems to be Thomas Leonhard (tal from cs.soton.ak.uk) I think the actual userspace files and folders (in .local) are created when you first launch a compliant desktop session. At least I couldn't find them in any package yet.
