Greetings. Let me expand on this. If Fote or someone else who both
understands and knows "portability" either writes or includes in
some generic file-handling routines, it will not only make adding
the above simple but will also allow the various patches (ok, mine)
to be more user-friendly. I don't want to write some code to create
a directory and then find out it wipes out someone's account on 
AIX or Solaris (it hurts to just say that... AIn't uniX)...

Maybe some GNU library could be stripped down and included. I don't
think it would make a big difference size-wise (except static?) It's
worth a few KB.
