The security concerns are not what's held it up; simply, nobody has done
the work.  (The security concern is simple: whoever implements it has to
remember to prevent anonymous or lynx-locked users from using the
external editor facility.)

Richard, once you get into Lynx go to Help (?), then the third item,
"Line Editor".  There you will learn about useful keys such as ^A (go to
beginning of line), ^E (end), ^P (back one word), ^N (forward one word).
While far from a complete solution, these should make it somewhat easier
to deal with the horizontal scrolling within a line.
