Is using '&' a good idea, since unix shells will require it to be  
escaped? Otherwise it will fork a background process with the command  
line up to it, and then try and run the following bits as their own  
command. '!' also makes bash very unhappy (if you try and include a  
commit message on the command line with a '!' then it tries to search  
the command history which is never what *I* want YMMV)
