I just thought I'd mention my reasoning for adding the "OR MODIFY" bit.
It was becoming rather difficult to determine how the previous template
would actually parsed. As simply modifying that line would cause it to
no longer be recognised, it seemed worthwhile to mention that.
Basically, I wanted each token to be self describing.

Otherwise, a user might then end up under the impression that they
needed to delete the whole line in order to cancel the commit when
deleting a single character would suffice. This could be painful in less
 featureful text editors. Of course, in something like vim, it's only a
couple of keystrokes to delete the line, but in that case the message is
not needed at all as vim can be told to exit with an error code anyway,
causing the commit to abort.
