I don't think I like that idea, for two reasons.  First, it
requires updating two files (instead of just one) whenever a
string is added, removed, or changed.  Second, it makes the
program(me?) unusable on a system on which the l10n files have
not been properly installed.

Anyway, I'm glad that we have an alternative that leaves no one
too unhappy.
