This is correct.   We can consider implementing copy/paste  in the variable 
view.
However there would be issues to be considered.  For example, the variable name
would have to somehow be automatically mutated on paste, otherwise there would
end up being two variables with the same name.

In the meantime it is trivial to create a variable using the syntax editor, and
then to cut, paste and edit as much as you want.  In general, for serious work,
I would recommend using syntax everytime.   Editiing directly in the variable or
data view is prone to slip-ups due to inadvertent mouse clicks, missing the 
target
during drag and drop etc, etc.   Those kind of features are things which I 
consider
to be a marketing gimmick rather than something to be seriously used.
