I've thought about your comments.  I would personally be in favor
of trapping the error because it's an easy thing to do and we
have good reason to believe that it's going to cause problems.
It may not be as asethetically pleasing; but, it avoids confusing
people and it helps to avoid people saying things like, "Oh yeah,
I tried grub once.  It thought I needed to update my binutils.
So, I just figured it was screwed up and gave up."

Which brings me to my point.  If you don't want to test for
the presence of 'cmp', howabout at least broadening your
error message so that the user is at least informed that the
problem could be something other than an outdated binutils?
