Preferring oauthlib wasn't about the unicode error.  It's just that oauthlib is maintained, has a python3 port, and is in Ubuntu main.  The first and third points are particularly important to me as the Ubuntu packager for duplicity.

(oauth2 isn't in main, and while oauth happens to be in main for now, the Ubuntu project is trying to port away from it to oauthlib since it is better maintained.)
