I'm running Ubuntu 14.04 as well.  Pip exists as pip2 and pip3 on Ubuntu as well.

Somehow I must have used pip3 to update pep8 and pylint.  Needed more coffee I guess.

For both pylint and pep8, I had to do 'sudo pip2 install -U pylint pep8'.  The use of pip unqualified installed them to run Python 3.

Just a quick side-note for those interested: on my Ubuntu 14.04-derived linux distro, the manpage reads: "On Debian, pip is the command to use when installing packages for Python 2, while pip3 is the command to use when installing packages for Python 3.". So it's like the opposite side to Ken's configuration.
