How about if you to discuss with some interested people
which specific changes to propose?

I think that turning some of these things on by default would not annoy
old users who don't want them.  We would only need to disable them once.
As long as disabling them is easy and straightforward, that is.

Some of these might be good for everyone.  For those that aren't, I
think it would be enough to provide a function to call to switch to
the old defaults.

Maybe -- but first how about trying the simpler approach described
